West End Dumplings - The Radio Edition for November 17, 2013

The podcast is available here !

Segment One: Bear stories featuring Debby the Polar Bear and Winnie the Pooh.

Segment Two: Roger Currie joins us to talk about Dinner and a Movie at the Metropolitan Entertainment Complex. The next one is November 26th and features the 1987 film The Untouchables.

I'll provide some history about "The Met" and Roger will share some of his memorable Met Theatre moments from the past !

Segment Three: It's a big week in history for Portage Avenue retail.

On November 18, 1926 the Hudson's Bay Company store at Portage and Memorial opens. Also, the Dayton Building, home to Dayton's Department store opened on November 19, 1955.  We'll also remember Albert Cohen, the entrepreneur behind SAAN stores and the GENDIS retail empire which included Portage Avenue's Metropolitan and Red Apple Clearance stores.

Segment Four: We look back at some prominent Manitobans who died during this week in history. Maitland Steinkpopf, John Higgins, George McPhillips and Guttormur Guttormsson, (read one of his poems here). We also wish the Golden Boy a happy erection ! He was hoisted to the top of the Legislature building on November 21, 1919.

Keep an eye out for links to these and more events each day at my This Was Manitoba blog !

Let me know what you think of the show !

Today's edition is a little more how I envision the show's regular format to be. Let me know  if you like it or not and why. There really isn't a similar show that I can use as a template and, though the show makes sense in my head, that doesn't mean it's the best listening experience for you !

Having worked at the zoo during Debbie's life, I have a ton of stories about her and longtime partner, Skipper. Great work tonight!
