Remembering Bruce Head

News yesterday that Winnipeg artist Bruce Head has died. Head was born in St. Boniface in 1931 and grew up in the West End. He graduated from U of M's art school in 1953 and spent over 30 years as a a graphic designer with the CBC in Winnipeg.

If you don't know Head's name you definitely have seen his work. His most noticeable piece is the concrete relief that covers the centre wall of the concourse at Portage and Main. At 400 feet in circumference, it's the largest concrete from created by an artist in Canada, (source).

Another are the huge panels on the main floor of the Woodsworth building on Broadway (above) and The Four Seasons at what is now Canadian Mennonite University.

Just last year, the WAG had a show Head Space: Five Decades of Bruce Head.
