The S.S. Winnipeg's Missions of Mercy
My latest column in the Winnipeg Free Press is about the S. S. Winnipeg.
The French passenger liner spent most of her nautical life ferrying passengers from France through the Panama Canal and along the Pacific Coast of North and South America. Her final years, though, were marked by war, shuttling refugees to safety until a German U-boat sank her 74 years ago.
Named for the city in 1918, our Mayor Webb was her honorary captain, she has a special place in Chilean history thanks to a 1949 rescue of 2,000 refugees from the Spanish Civil War. Thousands of Europeans fleeing war and possible death in concentration camps, were also saved by the Winnipeg.
