The former Sir Sam Steele School on Chester Street (built 1918 - 21) is also coming down. The first step is brick reclamation from the facade. The lot will become an extension to the Habitat for Humanity housing complex that sits to the east.
The site was purchased by Habitat for Humanity in 2007. They hived off the school fields for their housing project facing Nairn. In 2008 they sold the building and 1.2 acres to the College of Immigrants Inc. but the building sat empty and unheated and it deteriorated badly. Habitat then repurchased the property and had it delisted as a heritage site.
