Manitoba's WWI Fallen: Private Fauntleroy Wickett of Souris

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, I am working on a series of blog posts and radio shows that will look at some of the Manitobans who died in action. For more about this project and links to other posts, follow this link.

Fauntleroy "Roy" Wickett was born in Tamworth, Ontario in 1888 to Jecoliah and Thomas Wickett. At around the age of 18, his family moved to Winnipeg.

The Wicketts moved around a lot, it appears that Thomas was a travelling salesman. Roy rarely appears in Henderson Directories but in 1914 he is working as a tinsmith for the Brett Manufacturing Company on Erin Street. The following year, he went to Souris and work as a tinsmith and farmhand.

On December 31, 1915, he enlisted with the 226th Overseas Battalion and in June went overseas with the 27th (City of Winnipeg) Battalion

Wickett was killed in action on July 11, 1917. His Circumstances of Death record did not survive, so there are no ffurther details as to how. He is buried at Fosse No. 10 Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

The following month, his brother, Victor R. Wickett, was injured in a gas attack, but survived.
