90 years standing guard at Portage and Main

First World War Soldier

If you find yourself at Portage and Main on Thursday, be sure to give World War 1 Soldier a salute.

The memorial was unveiled by the Bank of Montreal at a ceremony on December 5, 1923. It commemorates the 230 bank employees, 9 of them from Winnipeg, who were killed in action during World War I.

To mark the occasion I have updated my Winnipeg Downtown Places post about the monument to include additional information about the statue, the artist and the bank employee who modelled for it.
