Tomorrow, November 18, marks the 85th anniversary of the official opening of the Bay's flagship store at Portage and Memorial. I have done a major update to my Winnipeg Downtown Places blog entry for the building, taking a look at the construction and official opening.

Tomorrow evening from 6-9 The Bay Downtown is celebrating with a reception Appetizers, drinks, entertainment and you could win an iPad !

  1. Nice! I think I've spent more money over the years at the downtown Bay than any other store.

  4. I once spent a year working behind the counter at The Bay. Good memories, thanks to a good supervisor we had in our department.

There are lots of stories I could share, but the best had to be the time a male customer was giving me a bit of a hard time about something, and being somewhat obnoxious about it. The whole time, a very elderly woman who must have been 85-90 years old waited silently in line.

As he finished, the elderly woman shouted out after him, "You're an a-----e!"

With a big smile on her face, she turned to me and said, "I knew you weren't allowed to say it, so I said it for you!"

I'm sure to this day that she considered herself a good Christian, and went home proud of having done her good deed for the day!

  6. I think somewhere deep in a box in the basement I have a postcard celebrating its grand opening. Maybe it's next to the picture of the womens urinals on the 2nd floor that I searched high and low for but to no avail...
