Main Street's Original Food Bar to become artist market

Original Food Bar, Winnipeg

It has been quite a few years for Main Street. On the blocks between City Hall and the Higgins Underpass a number of new developments have taken place filling in the most stubborn of vacant lots and unused buildings. One noticeable exception has been 564 1/2 Main Street at Rupert.

From 1935 to 1999 it was home to the Original Food Bar, (the original building was destroyed by fire in 1977.) The last owner was Siloam Mission which occupied it from 1999 to 2004. It has spent the last decade boarded up.

The Compendium Artist Market has leased the building and is renovating it into a graphic arts studio and gallery. It is expected to open in May or June 2014. With it, one of the last missing teeth in Main Street's smile will be filled in.

For more about the project check out their website, Facebook page or this article from The Manitoban. For more about the history of the building, check out my latest Winnipeg Downtown Places post.
