Jane’s Walk is a series of free neighbourhood walking tours that help put people in touch with their community. Created in Toronto in 2007, they are now held worldwide.
This year there are a dozen walks taking place in Winnipeg. Be sure to check one out near you or, better yet, discover a brand new part of town by choosing a street or neighbourhood that you've never heard of !
The Burnell Street walk will be held both Saturday May 5 and Sunday, May 6 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The gathering point is out front of the former Grey Goose Garage and ends at the former West End Library near Burnell and Ellice, now home to the Daniel MacIntyre / St. Matthews Community Association, (DMSMCA).
Come learn about people like Icelander Thorsteinn Oddson who built the apartment blocks on Burnell Street and on St. Paul Avenue, many of which are still around today. Eva Leadbetter, the street’s Depression-era “saint”. Louise Staples who created what is now the national school safety patrol program.
Also, find out about the interesting collection of buildings and sites, past and present. From commercial bakeries - two of them - to an ice cream factory and a baseball diamond that was home to Canada’s largest commercial baseball league. Find out where Livinia Street was and why the Nunavut flag is flown proudly.
Folks from the DMSMCA will be along to talk about the community programming that is going on today, from community gardens and safety programming to home exterior fix-up grants and the Orioles' Bike Cage.
Parking is available on the street (please do not park on the Goose site - it's still a working bus garage !) The DMSMCA building will be open if you'd like a sit-down or drink of water before returning to your car.
