Urban Dumplings and Miscellanea

1. Small Talk: A couple of posts about living small. One from India where small, yet comfortable and affordable, homes from 283 to 465 sq ft are on offer. On THIS side of the world, JF Ratthé gives us part 2 of "Small is the New Big".

Will people thrust aside the dream of a domicile with a bedroom large enough to house them and their vehicle ? As with everything, too much of a good thing and all that but I think that there's a lot of room for small.

After umpteen years of downtown apartment dwelling I made the plunge last year and bought a condo in, what Ratthé considers, the 'starter home' price range. If not for the price, I wouldn't have bothered.

Next to me is a building with smaller units and retailed for under $100k. The folks are younger, some don't own cars and, instead of renters, are homeowners in the inner city. Just the type of folks that you'd want dotting an up-and-coming area to spend time after hours and create the need for coffee shops, small restaurants, maybe a used bookstore.

2. Winnipeg Revisited: Way back I posted "Stuff Called Winnipeg" about the assortment of products marketed around the world with our name - from funky mirrors to fancy purses. I will have to add the HMCS Winnipeg to the list.

Since her pirate hunting mission was extended
she's been hitting the international media as well. CBS, UPI, de Volksrant, Xinhua have all made mention of her in recent days.

3. Runaway: Most Winnipeggers return from Cannes with little more than a nice tan and the sad realization that they're not as good looking as they thought they were. Cordell Barker, though, won best short film at the Cannes Film Festival. To see some of Runaway and a selection of his other works, including The Cat Came Back, check out his NFB page. Congrats !!

4. This is too bad: VC goes up for auction Monday night
"The Victoria Cross of Robert Shankland, one of the trio of First World War heroes from Winnipeg's 'Valour Road', is to be auctioned next month in Toronto".

I hope the Vets' Affairs Minister lives up to his word and not let it leave Canada. (UPDATE)
