Planning by Default

I read an interesting article I in the Spring 2007 issue of Next American City magazine entitled The Vacant Building Syndrome (yeah, my reading pile is a bit behind schedule !)

The authors say that in the US the old 70's style policies of 'planning by bulldozer' are making a comeback in some urban centres. Similar to what we've been seeing lately on Main Street and might have seen in Point Douglas. The article states:

When no productive policy exists, demolition is the easiest way to look like the problem is being addressed. The vacant building syndrome is simply planning by default.

I thought it was an interesting read and had some local applications.
